Pipe band competitions at Highland Games are a major attraction that combine the competitive element with the spectacle of Scottish scenery, dancers, and pipers. Competitions can include a variety of events, such as solo piping and drumming, core bands, and massed bands:

Solo piping and drumming: Pipers and drummers compete in different events, such as piobaireachd, march and strathspey and reel, and hornpipes and jigs. Judges evaluate the competitors on their execution, expression, tempo, tone and tuning, and more.

Massed bands: All bands assemble to play together, often at the beginning and end of the ceremonies. Massed bands may play pieces like "Scotland the Brave", "The Rowan Tree", "Green Hills of Tyrol", and "When the Battle is O'er".

Judges for pipe band competitions are usually seasoned professional players who have passed an exam to become certified. Some Highland Games competitions, like the Spokane Scottish Highland Games, require bands to submit a list of tunes and players when they enter. Bands may also be allowed to challenge up and play in a higher grade event. All competing bands are often required to participate in the opening and closing ceremonies massed bands to receive prizes and travel money.

The band follows the direction of the pipe major; when on parade the band may be led by a drum major, who directs the band with a mace. Standard instrumentation for a pipe band involves 6 to 25 pipers, 3 to 10 side drummers, 1 to 6 tenor drummers and 1 bass drummer.
